Let’s just cut to the chase: this isn’t about a black life, a white life, a blue life, or a hard life.
This is about your life. The life you have because God uniquely shaped your existence and gave you breath.
It’s kind of baffling isn’t it? To consider the stars, galaxies, and planets that exist far beyond our human sight are quite tiny compared to the One who created them. And then to think this same Creator God, who carved out time and space, paid special attention to mankind.
The glory of his majestic creativity is found in every nook and cranny of creation – from the tiny wingtips of a sparrow dipping low in flight, to the detailed science of the water cycle that literally sustains life on earth.
But He chose to set his glory uniquely upon humans, and God shows up with increasing clarity in our lives as we relate to him.
It’s like this: God hand-crafted each one of us with specific qualities through which He would show up in this world. He put us together with great care, and planted within us individually shaped gifts and talents that are not equal to anyone else’s.
He did this so that we would show Him in a one-of-a-kind way to the world around us. Your life was made to brilliantly display God in a way no other person can.
This is why your life matters. Because no one else can show God like you do.
This is why your neighbor’s life matters, because no one else can show God like they do.
God gave dignity…divinely inspired significance…to every human being who has ever lived upon this earth. Some people reject this honor and choose instead to live according to their own desires, because this is where they think their best life is found.
They want what they want because they want to be the King of Everything. (Which, here’s a hint: that isn’t actually possible because technically there is only one Sovereign God and all efforts to usurp his position end with disastrous results.) (Trust me.)
This rejection of God is where evil manifests. In it’s simplest form, evil is reproduced in the one who chooses to live apart from God.
One the other hand, real life and real good is found in the one who chooses to live according to the revelation of God. The only way you and I can live the life we were designed for, is to live in response to God’s direction, completely wide open to his influence.
This is the kind of life where God shows up brilliantly and uniquely, and there is not one single life that matters more than another.
The world would be different if we trained our eyes to search for the way God shows up in others. If that became our focus, skin color would simply be a sparkly accessory that accentuated the true glory underneath.
Yes, black, blue, and white lives matter. But I can’t help but think that when you and I discover the significance of our very own individual lives…when we grasp the unique way God has chosen for his glory to show up in us…then we won’t need to categorize ourselves by color or profession or position.
There will always be wicked enemies of God who spend their lives trying to grab all the power for themselves. If this life on earth were all there is, then it might often appear like the enemy is winning.
But nothing and no one can outdo the evidence of God’s glory in all creation. No enemy can overtake the glory of God. Period.
God gave you dignity, and he crowned you with the honor of showing him off to this world in incomparable ways.
And then he set you down in this generation, in the place you are right now, to boldly and confidently shine light into the darkness…in the way only you can.
This is why your life matters.
