This may sound a little off the wall, but I have this unshakable desire for you to discover who you really are.
Mainly because the difference between average and awesome hangs in the balance of knowing who you are in Christ.
I know you’re semi-happy with your life, and you feel like you can’t complain too much because things could always be worse. Yet you can’t quite shake that nagging dissatisfaction, so you conclude that going through the motions must be as good as it gets.
But if you only knew…if you could just get a glimpse of the stock pile of awesomeness that God has for you, it would blow your mind.
Maybe you think you don’t have what it takes to get too close to Jesus, or that your habits and hang-ups disqualify you from any kind of righteous hope.
Can I just tell you a secret? My life blows that theory out of the water. I’m living proof that God doesn’t shy away from an unholy mess. And this is the very reason I burn on the inside with a zealous desire for you to know who you are. Because life really can be so much more than you ever dreamed.
I’m sure Google can help you figure out who you are. Just fill up the search box right now, and you could have a rough sketch of your temperamental make-up within minutes. Or take a quiz on Facebook to find out which Beverly Hills 90210 character you are.
(Everything on Google or Facebook is definitely true, right?)
While there are a number of legitimate ways to discover your tendencies, strengths and aptitude, the most accurate assessment of your life is found in God’s word. Which, I know, sounds like one of those empty things Christians sometimes say.
But frankly, I hang my life on it because it’s proven true over and over again. When you and I lean in close to God’s word, we will find our significance, our worth, and our purpose.
God intentionally created YOU for a special purpose (Ephesians 2:10). He knew what he was doing when he knit YOU together in your mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13), and he set YOU apart with a holy calling (2 Timothy 1:9).
Pastors, bible study leaders, and the faithful older lady who sits in the front row at church aren’t the only ones with a calling you know. YOU have a unique gift that God placed within you, for the purpose of bringing him glory and encouraging others.(1 Peter 4:10)
Because of Christ, you don’t have to live like you’re just getting by. You don’t have to keep feeling like you’re “less than” all the successful people around you. You don’t have to buy the lie anymore that some people are just extra special and more valuable than others.
He gave you certain talents and abilities for a reason; and your strengths and abilities were purposefully and thoughtfully deposited within you according to his masterful design. God wired your heart to race fast over the certain things you enjoy, and your dreams of greatness were sewn into your soul by the One who shaped it.
I know you’ve been wishing you had all the things he gave someone else instead, (because her life seems so much more rich and exciting, and his talents affect more people and all).
But you can take this to the bank: God purposefully packed one-of-a-kind awesomeness in you that isn’t exactly duplicated in any person on this planet.
That means you have the opportunity to impact the people around you in a way that no one else can. And when you start living in the rhythm of his spirit, you’ll be blown away by the things he accomplishes through you.
You have one life – one that was made for adventure. So why waste your finite number of days here on things that don’t matter? Why wake up day after day, trudging through one mediocre week after the next, as if your amazing life doesn’t make a difference?
The reason you ache with a longing that there has to be more to life…is because there is.
Start believing you are who God says you are. Because when you do, your one shot at life will be nothing short of awesome.
Talk to you soon…!
