I love Pinterest. So much so, that I can’t remember what I did without it. And yes, maybe I exaggerate a little; but I’m not joking when I tell you that Pinterest is my go-to source for recipes, menus, and all kinds of DIY projects. As the #KitchenFail that I am, I need all the help I can get. Come over one evening, and watch me cook dinner; it will take you all of ten minutes to know that is no exaggeration.
One of my favorite things about Pinterest, is that it tells me what to do, and shows me how to do it. It’s not merely a newsfeed filled with inspiring pictures of home decor and homemade yogurt popsicles. It’s a place to go when you need to know How To______.
I kind of wish learning and applying the truth of the Bible was as simple as a Pinterest-style How-To.
Because seriously: you and I need the truth. All the day long, we are inundated with expectations, images, and standards of who we should, could, and ought to be. We constantly balance ourselves on the scales of “good enough”, hoping they’ll tip down in our direction. Sometimes I find that I’m on a constant search to do more and be more…wondering when I will finally be content with who I am.
I’m sure you’ve heard time and again that your true worth and your identity are found in Christ. That sounds AWESOME…but what does that mean in real life?
It’s time we understand what our identity in Christ really means for us on a random Tuesday morning: as we rush hurriedly through the carpool line, or as we drag ourselves into the office, or as wrestle with a toddler down every aisle of the grocery store.
Inevitably, I finish that book, and I’m still me. I am still a woman searching for the instructions. I’m not satisfied with acquiring knowledge, I want to know how to live it out.
It is possible to live beyond the Gospel-jargon, into the true measure of who God created us to be through Jesus. But to tap into that, we have to know what the Bible says about us in the first place.
So here’s the deal: that’s what we’ll be doing on Tuesdays around here, starting next Tuesday (September 23). The posts on these days will be centered on one single identity trait that is ours in Christ. Each week, we’ll look at a new one, until we build a solid foundation of truth into our lives.
We’ll look at these traits as they are described in scripture, and we’ll pull the verses apart to understand what they really mean for our everyday, ordinary existence.
This is where the how-to part comes in: we’ll pick the truth up, and try it on for size. It will be kind of like looking into a mirror, to get an idea of what your true identity looks like when we choose to wear it.
You won’t leave here with words filed away in your head: you’ll leave here with one sticky truth that you’ll carry around and use all week long.
My hope is that this blog will be where you come on Tuesdays to get truth you can wrap your hands around, not just information to store in your head. (Of course you’re welcome any other day, too…but I’m just saying.)
Consider this thing our Identity Project (so we can sound like all the cool people on Pinterest).
