Let me just lay it out straight: I have a 10 year old son who has a relatively loose summer bedtime; I let him eat powdered donuts for breakfast; and he’s had an iPad since he turned 6.
My wall isn’t filled with framed parenting awards, so you know, I’m not really the parenting expert you love to follow on The Social Media. I figured I should tell you this upfront so you could decide whether or not to read further.
The whole motherhood thing isn’t my only weakness that’s for sure. I fail every day, all over the place, but my heart is unquestionably aimed at the heart of Jesus. Whatever it is that I lack in willpower or knowledge or wisdom, I make up for in prayer. Literally.
I may not have an experience-based wisdom that guides my parenting decisions or strategies, but I do have the ability to ask God to give whatever I need. And He does.
Which is why I could scoot up a chair and chat with you all day long about why, how, and what to pray. The good thing about prayer is that it’s power is not limited to any human’s ability. All you need is Jesus, and you already have what it takes to boldly approach the Only True God, the King of the Universe, the Giver of all Good Gifts.
Here’s my best advice (which is technically more than advice – it’s the truth as scripture tells it, so you know…kind of a big deal):
“Prayer isn’t something you wait to do once you finally feel holy enough, or until you’ve done enough *righteous* things to prove you’re acceptable to God. God extended your personal invitation to His throne room through Jesus Christ, who has already made you complete. Jesus is your *enough*, so leave your shame stuff at the door, and go on in…boldly!”
Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16 NASB
If you’re sort of at a loss for words once you get there, you should totally get to know my friend Arabah Joy. She is an online spiritual mentor of sorts, and she’s developed various 40 day prayer challenges that are rooted in God’s promises.
(These are particularly fantastic because she’s not just leading you with random Christian-y words, she’s anchoring her prayer to those things God has already marked as yours.) (You almost can’t afford to miss that!)
These 40 day challenges are for ordinary people like us who want to know and experience God more in prayer.
Remember how I mentioned my lack of parenting awards and such? Well, that wasn’t random (which proves there is a first for everything). Arabah’s Fall 2016 Challenge is a Back to School Prayer Challenge where you are invited to pray God’s word specifically for your children.
And Lord have mercy, do I ever need that.
Each day of the challenge, Arabah provides you with a scripture promise to pray, along with instructions for how to pray them. Your job is to show up and watch how God’s word transforms your life…and particularly, the lives of your children!
I seriously can’t even be more excited for you about this, so before I get overly-hyped, just follow this link to sign yourself up: Join the Back to School Prayer Challenge
(The live challenge kicked off on August 8th, but you can do this challenge AT ANY TIME. You’ll be given every resource you need whenever you sign up.)
Lastly…even if you have zero interest in the prayer challenge, you will not regret the time you spend with Arabah. She makes you feel right at home on her blog www.arabahjoy.com, and every time I read her newsletter, I feel like she’s just sent me a personal email.
Arabah makes me want to walk in truth. (And I’m not even being dramatic.) So yeah, I’m pretty sure you would love her, too.
By the way- if you do take this prayer challenge…will you pretty please keep me in the loop? I mean you don’t have to leave a comment here or anything wild and crazy like that. Just find me on Facebook or something and fill me in on how God has opened your eyes and changed your world through your prayers. (Because that’s the best thing ever.)
